Herding

Pembroke Welsh Corgis were originally bred as all-around farm dogs, with herding livestock being one of their most important jobs. Although most Pembrokes today do not have livestock at home, herding activities give them an opportunity to demonstrate the instincts and working abilities that remain part of the breed. Herding instinct tests allow a Corgi to experience livestock under the guidance of an experienced judge, while herding tests and trials provide opportunities to earn titles and advance to more challenging levels. Pembrokes can be especially effective around cattle, where their determination, courage, and quickness are valuable assets. Their low stature and agile movement allow them to work close to livestock while avoiding kicks. For Pembrokes who discover a passion for working stock, herding can become a rewarding pursuit that connects them with the job for which their ancestors were bred.
